Encaustic with a Crackle Finish & Pigment Sticks

Tuesday & Wednesday, August 2 & 3, 6 pm - 9 pm each night, $175

The crackle finish is a resist you paint onto warm wax then super heat until it cracks, leaving an elegant organic finish that would be almost impossible to paint by hand. First we'll make a couple of paintings with wax then add the fun stuff on top, but once you learn the process you can use this technique on any layer of wax. I have a variety of boards in different sizes, but if you have paintings in progress please feel free to bring them in sizes up to about 11" x 14". This finish requires the use of a propane torch so if you aren't familiar with how to use one you'll learn that too. I have the crackle finish in a variety of colors and will teach you how to make your own custom colors at home. Bring a small glass jar with a tight fitting lid and you can make your own colored crackle mix to take home and continue playing!

Think of pigment sticks -- a mixture of pigment, beeswax and linseed oil -- as oil paint in stick form that can be applied directly to your wax paintings. By incorporating pigment sticks you can add depth to your encaustic paintings not possible with wax alone. I'll demonstrate how to go over the crackle finish with pigment sticks to create a delicate glaze of color and how to use these versatile materials to fill lines and add depth to all of your paintings.

All supplies (except optional glass jar) will be provided and most students leave class with 2 - 3 finished projects. Confirmation, directions to my studio and additional information will be emailed to each student upon registration. Space is limited to 6 students so classes fill quickly.

Please note: This is an intermediate class for those comfortable working with wax. If you haven't taken a beginning encaustic class you will have to complete one before learning these advanced techniques. Feel free to call me with any questions.
